Since earning her master\u2019s and doctorate in psychology over a decade ago (while raising three young children and working full-time), Rozen has helped executive leadership teams at companies like Johnson &amp; Johnson, Merrill Lynch, Coca-Cola and Pfizer navigate massive organizational changes. Her work in this field has even earned her the nickname \u201cthe change doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rozen\u2019s latest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/6-Club-Achieving-Thriving-Business\/dp\/1394254326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The 6% Club<\/em><\/a>, digs into how we can create and achieve the goals that we set out to accomplish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This interview has been edited for length and clarity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-success-what-is-the-6-club\"><strong><em>SUCCESS+:<\/em><\/strong> What is the 6% club?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michelle Rozen:<\/strong> I surveyed 1,000 people all over the U.S. It was January 2023, and they all had some kind of a goal\u2014business, personal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/short-term-financial-goals\/\">money<\/a>, relationship, health, anything. I said, \u201cLet\u2019s see what happens with those people over time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I surveyed them from January to June, and what I found out literally made my jaw drop\u2014because what I found was that 94% of the people that pledged to do something dropped whatever they pledged for by February. And so that\u2019s how the 6% club was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.achieversallaccess.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/SUCCESS_CTA_r1@2x.png\" alt=\"SUCCESS+ Subscription offer\"><\/a>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-what-is-the-0-10-rule-and-how-can-someone-use-it-to-help-them-become-one-of-the-6\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>:<em> <\/em><\/strong>What is the 0\u201310 rule, and how can someone use it to help them become one of the 6%?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>The 0\u201310 rule basically means that in the span of your day, you have too much to do. But if you run into a 94-percenter, one of the things that you\u2019ll hear is, \u201cOh my gosh, I\u2019m so busy&#8230;. I\u2019ve been running around the whole day, [and I] didn\u2019t even have lunch.\u201d But if you look into what they actually accomplish in a given day\u2014if you have things to do on a span of 10 is the most important [thing], and two and three are the less important things\u2014they do a whole lot of twos and threes. Because there\u2019s not enough time in the day, they don\u2019t even get to their 10s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you get is a whole lot of busy with very little progress. One of the things that is characteristic of the six-percenters is that they are very, very good at identifying what their 10s are for the day, and they\u2019re going to get those 10s down, no matter what. The twos and threes? They\u2019re going to delegate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-how-did-you-develop-the-0-10-rule\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>:<\/strong> How did you develop the 0\u201310 rule?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>Originally I borrowed it from the world of psychology and adapted it to the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/what-is-satisficing-decision-making\/\">decision-making<\/a> and prioritizing. I used it on myself first, and it helped me figure out how to prioritize my time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I started working with top leadership teams, I started sharing that tool with them and developing it. They find it incredibly helpful because they have too many things to do and their teams have too many things to do. When I did the research on the 6%, I discovered that one of the things that characterizes 6-percenters is ruthless prioritizing, compared to the 94%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-what-s-the-biggest-difference-between-a-good-leader-and-a-great-leader\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>:<\/strong> What\u2019s the biggest difference between a good leader and a great leader?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>People skills\u2014that\u2019s the biggest shift that happened in leadership from 2020 until today. And it\u2019s a struggle for a lot of people because leadership used to be very matrix-oriented, and now it\u2019s very people-oriented. The bottom line is, if you\u2019re not the kind of person that has excellent people skills\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/communication-skills-for-success\/\">communication<\/a> and coaching, things of that nature\u2014you really need to work on it. They\u2019re not skills that you can\u2019t acquire, but they\u2019re not optional. They\u2019re mandatory for leaders today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-how-can-leaders-better-grow-and-adapt-to-the-inevitable-yet-necessary-changes-they-see-within-their-team-or-organization\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>: <\/strong>How can leaders better grow and adapt to the inevitable yet necessary changes they see within their team or organization?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>The world changes very quickly. It\u2019s a shift from the kind of person that says, \u201cHow do I adapt?\u201d\u2014which is more passive\u2014to \u201cHow do I&#8230; not just adapt, but initiate change to things to make them more impactful and effective? Within the changing landscape, how do I better my ways as a leader? How do I become more effective? How do I fix the things that don\u2019t work so that I am able to reach my goals?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop doing things that don\u2019t work and focus on your strengths and the things that you can improve so you can perform better in this rapidly changing world. Don\u2019t argue with the changing world. Don\u2019t hope that things will go back to old times\u2014because they won\u2019t. It\u2019s going to keep changing very quickly. Since earning her master\u2019s and doctorate in psychology over a decade ago (while raising three young children and working full-time), Rozen has helped executive leadership teams at companies like Johnson &amp; Johnson, Merrill Lynch, Coca-Cola and Pfizer navigate massive organizational changes. Her work in this field has even earned her the nickname \u201cthe change doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Rozen\u2019s latest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/6-Club-Achieving-Thriving-Business\/dp\/1394254326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The 6% Club<\/em><\/a>, digs into how we can create and achieve the goals that we set out to accomplish.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>This interview has been edited for length and clarity.<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-success-what-is-the-6-club\"><strong><em>SUCCESS+:<\/em><\/strong> What is the 6% club?<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Michelle Rozen:<\/strong> I surveyed 1,000 people all over the U.S. It was January 2023, and they all had some kind of a goal\u2014business, personal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/short-term-financial-goals\/\">money<\/a>, relationship, health, anything. I said, \u201cLet\u2019s see what happens with those people over time.\u201d <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>So I surveyed them from January to June, and what I found out literally made my jaw drop\u2014because what I found was that 94% of the people that pledged to do something dropped whatever they pledged for by February. And so that\u2019s how the 6% club was born.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:html -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:html -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-what-is-the-0-10-rule-and-how-can-someone-use-it-to-help-them-become-one-of-the-6\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>:<em> <\/em><\/strong>What is the 0\u201310 rule, and how can someone use it to help them become one of the 6%?<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>The 0\u201310 rule basically means that in the span of your day, you have too much to do. But if you run into a 94-percenter, one of the things that you\u2019ll hear is, \u201cOh my gosh, I\u2019m so busy.... I\u2019ve been running around the whole day, [and I] didn\u2019t even have lunch.\u201d But if you look into what they actually accomplish in a given day\u2014if you have things to do on a span of 10 is the most important [thing], and two and three are the less important things\u2014they do a whole lot of twos and threes. Because there\u2019s not enough time in the day, they don\u2019t even get to their 10s. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>What you get is a whole lot of busy with very little progress. One of the things that is characteristic of the six-percenters is that they are very, very good at identifying what their 10s are for the day, and they\u2019re going to get those 10s down, no matter what. The twos and threes? They\u2019re going to delegate them.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-how-did-you-develop-the-0-10-rule\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>:<\/strong> How did you develop the 0\u201310 rule?<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>Originally I borrowed it from the world of psychology and adapted it to the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/what-is-satisficing-decision-making\/\">decision-making<\/a> and prioritizing. I used it on myself first, and it helped me figure out how to prioritize my time. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>When I started working with top leadership teams, I started sharing that tool with them and developing it. They find it incredibly helpful because they have too many things to do and their teams have too many things to do. When I did the research on the 6%, I discovered that one of the things that characterizes 6-percenters is ruthless prioritizing, compared to the 94%.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-what-s-the-biggest-difference-between-a-good-leader-and-a-great-leader\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>:<\/strong> What\u2019s the biggest difference between a good leader and a great leader?<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>People skills\u2014that\u2019s the biggest shift that happened in leadership from 2020 until today. And it\u2019s a struggle for a lot of people because leadership used to be very matrix-oriented, and now it\u2019s very people-oriented. The bottom line is, if you\u2019re not the kind of person that has excellent people skills\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.success.com\/communication-skills-for-success\/\">communication<\/a> and coaching, things of that nature\u2014you really need to work on it. They\u2019re not skills that you can\u2019t acquire, but they\u2019re not optional. They\u2019re mandatory for leaders today.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-s-how-can-leaders-better-grow-and-adapt-to-the-inevitable-yet-necessary-changes-they-see-within-their-team-or-organization\"><strong><em>S+<\/em>: <\/strong>How can leaders better grow and adapt to the inevitable yet necessary changes they see within their team or organization?<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>MR: <\/strong>The world changes very quickly. It\u2019s a shift from the kind of person that says, \u201cHow do I adapt?\u201d\u2014which is more passive\u2014to \u201cHow do I... not just adapt, but initiate change to things to make them more impactful and effective? Within the changing landscape, how do I better my ways as a leader? How do I become more effective? How do I fix the things that don\u2019t work so that I am able to reach my goals?\u201d <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Stop doing things that don\u2019t work and focus on your strengths and the things that you can improve so you can perform better in this rapidly changing world. Don\u2019t argue with the changing world. Don\u2019t hope that things will go back to old times\u2014because they won\u2019t. It\u2019s going to keep changing very quickly.
